Every software team tests \u2014 or at least says they do. Yet somehow, bugs still slip into production, test suites take 45 minutes to run, and nobody wants to touch the integration tests because they break for seemingly no reason.<\/p>\n
Sound familiar? You might be suffering from one or more of the testing anti-patterns that silently erode your quality assurance efforts.<\/p>\n
Kostis Kapelonis catalogued these high-level, technology-agnostic patterns in his widely-referenced article on software testing anti-patterns. What makes his list valuable is that it does not focus on specific frameworks or languages \u2014 these are structural problems that can plague any team, regardless of their tech stack.<\/p>\n
Here are the most damaging ones and how to fix them.<\/p>\n
This is the classic pattern in small to mid-sized companies: an application has hundreds of unit tests but zero integration tests. The team feels productive because the green bar is always on \u2014 but they are testing in a vacuum.<\/p>\n
Unit tests verify individual classes and methods in isolation. They cannot catch database transaction failures, contract mismatches between services, deadlocks, or performance timeouts. These cross-cutting concerns require integration tests that actually spin up (parts of) the running system.<\/p>\n
If you are building a typical web application and your team claims that setting up a test environment is too hard, the problem is not testing \u2014 it is your deployment process. Containers and virtual machines have made environment setup a solved problem. Fix the setup first, then add integration tests.<\/p>\n
The fix:<\/strong> For every critical service, write at least one integration test that verifies the happy path touches the database, the network, or an external system. Unit tests handle business logic; integration tests verify that everything actually works together.<\/p>\n The opposite problem is more common in large enterprises. Experienced developers, burned by past management mandates for 100% code coverage, decide that unit tests are a waste and rely entirely on integration tests.<\/p>\n Here is the math that proves why this is expensive. Take a service with four modules whose cyclomatic complexities are 2, 5, 3, and 2. Covering all code paths with unit tests requires 12 tests. Covering the same paths with only integration tests requires testing 2 \u00d7 5 \u00d7 3 \u00d7 2 = 60 possible request journeys \u2014 and corner cases buried deep in the call chain become nearly impossible to trigger reliably.<\/p>\n Speed is another killer. Assume a unit test takes 60ms and an integration test takes 800ms. A 40-service application with 10 unit tests and 2 integration tests per service runs in roughly 1.4 minutes. The same application with only integration tests takes 6.4 minutes \u2014 and that number climbs fast in real-world projects.<\/p>\n The fix:<\/strong> Unit tests for business logic. Integration tests for communication, serialization, and external dependencies. They are not competitors; they are complementary layers.<\/p>\n Not all code is equally important. A bug in the discount calculation engine of an e-commerce application has a very different business impact than a formatting glitch in the admin dashboard footer. Yet many teams treat all code with the same testing priority.<\/p>\n The physical folder structure of a codebase implies that all components matter equally. They do not. Kapelonis suggests visualizing your application as a dependency graph rather than a file tree. Identify the components that, if they fail, would cause the most damage \u2014 payment processing, authentication, core business rules \u2014 and concentrate your testing efforts there.<\/p>\n Testing trivial getters and setters, or writing tests just to boost coverage metrics, is worse than writing no tests at all. It creates maintenance burden without reducing risk.<\/p>\n The fix:<\/strong> Map your code by business criticality, not by folder. Test the high-impact paths thoroughly. Accept that 100% coverage is usually not worth the cost.<\/p>\n Test code is production code. When teams treat tests as second-class citizens \u2014 skipping code reviews, tolerating duplication, ignoring flaky results \u2014 they create a downward spiral. Flaky tests erode trust, which leads developers to ignore test failures, which allows real bugs to reach production.<\/p>\n Flakiness usually comes from shared mutable state, timing assumptions, or uncontrolled external dependencies. These are fixable problems, but they require the same engineering discipline you apply to your application code.<\/p>\n Another subtle anti-pattern is never converting production bugs into regression tests. When a bug reaches users, the first response is to fix it quickly and move on. Without a corresponding test, that same bug can \u2014 and often does \u2014 reappear months later when someone refactors the affected code.<\/p>\n The fix:<\/strong> Every production bug gets a regression test before the ticket is closed. Period. Invest in test infrastructure that makes flaky tests visible and fixable \u2014 quarantine them, do not ignore them.<\/p>\n The honest truth is that most developers who hate testing have simply never experienced a healthy test suite. They have worked in environments where tests were slow, brittle, or forced by management mandates detached from engineering reality.<\/p>\n Breaking out of that cycle requires intentional choices: match your test strategy to your application type (a CLI tool needs different tests than a payment gateway), invest in making tests fast and reliable, and \u2014 most importantly \u2014 treat testing as a first-class engineering practice, not an afterthought.<\/p>\n Your test suite should be the safety net that gives your team confidence to refactor and ship quickly.
